Department of Social Work

With nearly 40 years of history and tradition in social work studies, the Department of Social Work under the School of Social Development, ECNU, is among the pioneers that have promoted the research, teaching and application of social work in China. The mission of the Department of Social Work is to produce all-rounded quality graduates with independent research competencies, creativity and problem-solving capabilities, and with broad knowledge of, humanities and social sciences so as to satisfy the demand for professional social workers for the development of China’s economy, society and innovation system, by providing high quality education in social work theories and practical skills. The Department boasts a strong teaching faculty with great academic strengths and specialized in various disciplines, and enjoys extensive exchanges with foreign counterparts. It has produced many high-quality graduates for the government sector, social organizations, philanthropic organizations and enterprises.

The Department of Social Works offers programs in five specialties:Social Work for Children, Youth and Family, Social Work for Elderly People,Medical Social Work, Social Welfare and Policy, Community Services and Governance.

  

Faculty:

The Department has 12 faculty members, including 3 professors, 4 associate professors, 4 lecturers and 1 supervisor for social work practice. More than 90% of them hold doctorates from overseas prestigious universities or have been studied abroad. The Department also engages 10 part-time supervisors for social work practice who are experienced in social work.

  

Education:

In 2005, ECNU started to enroll students in the adult education program in social work, and set up the specialty of “Social Work” under sociology at undergraduate level.

In 2007, ECNU was approved to launch the postgraduate program in “Social Work and Administration” officially.

In 2008, the Department started to enroll students in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in “Social Work”.

In 2011, the Department officially started to enroll students in the MSW program.

In 2015, ECNU School of Social Development-NYU Silver School of Social Work Joint Program for the collaborative training of duel degree Ph.D was official launched.

In 2017, the Department started to enroll students in the MSW part-time program and full-time doctoral program.

Founded in October 2010, the Social Work Practice Center is an excellent practice platform for students and offers a variety of professional courses, training and seminars on social work practice. In 2016, supported by the Ministry of Education Repair and Purchase Fund, the Center was upgraded with optimized software and hardware that can better satisfy the demand for the education of social work practice. The Department has developed partnerships with over 40 internship bases including Shanghai First Social Welfare Institute and Shanghai Children’s Hospital. We also offer exchange and internship programs in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, etc.

  

Academics:

Since 2013, the Department has undertaken 32 research projects of different types, including a major project sponsored by the National Social Science Foundation, a major project of the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, 6 projects of provincial and ministerial levels, with a total of RMB 1.1 million research grants awarded. Our publications include 6 monographs or textbooks, over 40 CSSCI articles (including 1 in Chinese Sociological Science and 2 in Sociological Studies), and nearly 10 SSCI articles.
